Advent and Purple People

Today is the first day of Advent and purple marks many of our churches (though I wore a blue stole this morning). I reflected on the color purple -- which is of course a mixture of blue and red -- today in my Lompoc Record column, which is entitled: "Red and blue, nah, we're purple."

In the column I offered a definition of purple people. Maybe you'll find this a fitting definition:

I believe that purple people are thinkers and questioners. They're a discerning group, who don't take the word of the pundit or the politician or even the preacher as gospel truth without checking things out first. They look at all the options, ask questions, and have the courage to say no to those who would try to manipulate them for political or economic gain. Purple is the color of checks and balances, and believe me, we need checks and balances, because as of yet we're not a perfect people!

What we need today in the church and in society at large is people willing to think first and speak and act secondarily. In the article I also offer a quote from Diana Butler Bass that speaks to how purple people can be followers of Jesus. Take a look and then come back and offer your opinion!

I lived for a while in Lompoc as a kid. We attended a church in Orcutt. It wasn't a disciple's church, I don't think, but it was a restoration church. My mom is a disciples minister.
