Marcus Borg -- On Faith -- On Just War

Marcus Borg , well known biblical scholar and author of The Heart of Christianity, offers his perspective on the Christian view of war, his own ultimate commitment to non-violence, and his somewhat reluctant recognition that sometimes war is necessary. But in this case, as others have pointed out, you can't justify it on just war considerations. Just Wars should be, he says, "rare exception."

There is virtue in seeing “just war” as the rare exception rather than seeing it as normal, with non-violence as the exception. Especially for American Christians who are citizens of the empire of our time, it is crucial to recover the early Christian emphasis upon non-violence. Imperial violence is almost always wrong. And perhaps the word “almost” should be omitted.

I especially like the last sentence of that Borg quote. But that's the Quaker in me speaking. :)
