What's with the Libby Trial?

I've not followed the trial too closely, but find the commentary about it interesting -- what am I talking about? The Scooter Libby perjury trial. [Though Libby's defense team has called lots of witnesses], I mean, Patrick Fitzgerald has called his witnesses, and none of the witnesses have corroborated his story -- which is essentially he forgot and that he's the fall guy for Karl Rove. Perjury trials are always a bit tricky, but since every witness has challenged Libby's earlier statements it's almost looking like a slam dunk.

But after all this, surely there's more to this, and it looks like there may be, even though the federal prosecutor -- Patrick Fitzgerald may not be able to prove it. What is that -- it's that Dick Cheney may have fudged the evidence for WMD to justify what has come to be a disastrous Iraq War. Why else was Cheney so intent on discrediting Joe Wilson. Unless there's something else to this story. And if there is -- as Andrew Sullivan suggests -- this could be an impeachable offense.

Now after the Clinton impeachment hearings, I doubt any of us are ready for that kind of thing. Whether Bush knew about this, I don't know, but perhaps it's time for this generation's version of "tricky Dick" to bow out and soon!

Libby's defense hasn't called ANY witnesses yet. The prosecution JUST rested its case today.

If you are going to write about something, shouldn't you know at least THE BASIC FACTS about it?

I'm sorry, I stand corrected! You're right. But, the people he suggests would corroborate his testimony haven't done him any favors.

Thanks for correcting that. Sorry I jumped all over you. The day I read your blog was one of those days where it seemed like almost every article I read in the MSM was full on inaccuracies and it was getting to me. I have read a lot on this trial and haven gotten really worked up over it. The fact that lies were used to take our country to war is just so sad.

When Bush took us to war, I prayed that he was telling the truth in his justifications for this war. I had some hope that, since he was a Christian, he would be an honest person. It's still hard for me to get my hands around the fact that he has just used his "faith" to get votes, and that when all is said and done, he is just a politician, doing what he does to maintain power.

I guess I should have had known better. If he were a true Christian, he would be a better steward of God's Earth.

Cricket,

No problem -- I'm glad you caught me in my faux pas. With blogs we don't have copy editors, so our readers become that.

As for Bush's faith, I don't doubt he is a person of his faith, but it does raise the question of the degree to which one's faith determines one's actions. I question whether his actions are in line with his faith -- but questions have been raised about mine on occasion.

It is truly sad, however, that people have gotten caught up in gamesmanship that have put us a nation in grave danger. But, I'm an optimist at heart, so I look forward to a new day!
