Religious Freedom and the Military

I have posted in the past, written a column for the newspaper, and have written to the Secretary of the VA about the need to recognize the Wiccan symbol on military graves/memorials.
For years Wiccans have been trying to get their symbol, a pentacle, recognized, but they have run into considerable resistance. Part of that resistance stems from the belief that Wicca is a Satanic religion. Now, I'm no Wiccan, don't plan to be, but I do think if we're going to recognize religious freedom for some, we should recognize it for all.
Gary Clark, a veteran and a Wiccan, has written a well-informed and passionate call for justice in the Seattle Times. There is currently a process underway that could change this status, but unfortunately it's flying under the radar. Here is Clark's plea and the information you need to register your support for religious freedom for all but supporting it for the minority.

Regardless of your political or religious beliefs, I urge everyone who believes in freedom of religion to make comments in order to protect the religious freedom of our troops and veterans.Folks can go to www.regulations.gov/fdmspublic/component/main, and work their way through the prompts to find Veterans Affairs and the proposed rule. You can type in "emblem of belief" in the keyword search field. When you make your comment, be quick about it, because there is a timer that will cut you off if you take more than a few minutes. You might prepare your remarks ahead of time and then cut and paste them into the comment section.

The way I look at it, whether members of our military die in action or not, they, and all our veterans, deserve the right to have whatever they want put on their grave marker — as an expression of their right to religious freedom.

I urge everyone to contact all of their friends and family who believe in freedom of religion, to support a soldier's/veteran's right to have freedom of religion, too.

I was sent this by Gary Clark as a clarification. I appreciate his helpfulness in this. I'm sorry that I misread his own self-identification.

Bob,

Thanks for the post.
As an aside, I am not a Wiccan - I just support their right, or anyone else's right, to freedom of religion.
Someone who knows me tried to post a comment to your blog, but it did not work.
Below is the the person's comment.

"I am not Wiccan, but I know people who are. It is a very misunderstood religion, resulting from superstitious fears and perceptions. I deeply believe everyone is entitled to freedom of choice, especially when it comes to their religious beliefs.
I believe any religious emblems requested for approval by the VA should be approved. Otherwise it is discrimination, to allow some but not others.
If the military accepts people to serve regardless of their religion, then they need to also be prepared to honor those differences. Especially when it comes to something like a veterans grave marker.
This world is filled with far too much 'us' and 'them' instead of 'we'.

Pastor Bob,
Thank you so much for your post. I am a Wiccan and this issue is very important to me. But the flip side of this is, this issue affects anyone who adheres to "a religion". Neither the VA nor any government agency has the right to pass judgement on what is deemed a "valid" religion. Today it is Wiccans, who knows what religion they could decide tomorrow is invalid according to their "criteria".

There are only a few days left for people to make comments on the VA's newly Proposed Rules for approval of an emblem of faith. Whethere anyone agrees that the Pentacle should be approved or not, the basic thing they should agree on is that the VA does not have the right, according to the Bill of Rights, to act in this capacity.

Everyone should go to
http://www.regulations.gov/fdmspublic/component/main, and leave their comments regarding this issue.
Locate Keyword or ID" search box, and type in the document's ID:
VA-2007-NCA-0008-0001. Under views they can type download either an Adobe or text version of the newly proposed rules. Once they have read them, they can click on the yellow balloon to leave their own comments.

But all need to remember, even though the Wiccans prompted this new set of rules from the VA, this issue lies at the heart of ALL RELIGIOUS FREEDOMS!! NOT JUST WICCANS!

Blessings of Love and Light
Lynne
