Evolution, Sex, and the Brain

Since I've been posting on Ed Humes' Monkey Girl, when I came across this post on Richard Beck's blog -- Experimental Theology -- I had to point it out.
In a post entitled "Theology and Evolutionary Psychology, Chapter 1: Natural and Sexual Selection 101 or Why Theology is Sexy," Beck, who is chair of the psych dept. at Abilene Christian University, discusses the issue of sexual selection, which Darwin suggested as explaining why male peacocks have those great feathers!
Since we human males don't have any fancy plummage what's our sexual organ? Well, evolutionary psychology may point to our brains. Yes, women are attracted to those who are smart -- so smartness (increased brain function) was selected. You must go to his site and read this -- it's great!!! It also helps confirm Darwin's theories. I'm hoping too that's why Cheryl married me -- for my brains!!!

Ya know, there's the theory that men have to compete for female attention because women have a limited supply of eggs and thus have to be selective, whereas men have an unlimited supply of sperm. So for peacocks, it's their feathers. For human males, it might be looks (looks never hurt), it might be brains or a sense of humor, it might be musical talent (think Christie Brinkley marrying Billy Joel, or Julia Roberts marrying Lyle Lovett), it might be money--but, in my case, it is a total mystery what my significant other sees in me. I just consider myself damn lucky that she hangs onto me.

In my case it must be the beard -- though before she met me she was not at all into beards. In middle age, I think it's the fact I still have my hair, though now it's going gray -- the picture lies!
