Presidential Money

Money makes the world go around -- that's what they say. In politics, like everything else in life, the more money you have the better off you are. The first quarter fundraising totals, as many already know, are in and there are surprises. One surprise is how much money the Democratic Candidates took in. Another surprise is how competitive Barack Obama is with Hillary Clinton. Though Mitt Romney is far behind in the GOP polls, he dwarfed his chief competitors.

John Edwards is right in saying that all this money is unhealthy, but with the front loaded primary system, it's really inevitable. You've got to give the impression you're a player early on. Now, someone may and likely will stumble -- I think McCain has stumbled badly and Guiliani is sure to drop. Will someone step up -- Fred Thompson appears to be a real possibility despite being dissed by Jim Dobson. In fact, being dissed by Jim might help him!

But back to the Democrats, Barack Obama's take is indicative that he is a big time player. He may trail Hillary Clinton, but as time goes by and if he doesn't stumble, he could become the anti-Hillary candidate. If he does and the primary battles don't scar him too badly, he should have a very strong chance at this. At this point the GOP doesn't have a star powered candidate -- Fred Thompson could be that.

This next quarter could be telling. By the end of it we may start seeing people drop out.

In any case, it's all quite exciting, and as an Obamaite, I'm feeling pretty good.
