End of an era? Jerry Falwell dies at age 73

The breaking news this morning is that Jerry Falwell, pastor of Thomas Road Baptist Church and founder of the Moral Majority, has died at age 73 -- apparently of a heart attack. As anyone who reads this blog knows, I've not been a big fan, but today we stop and pray for his family as they grieve this unexpected loss.

His death serves as a reminder that this is really a moment of transition. Even as James Kennedy pulls back from his political activities, Jerry Falwell dies. Other leaders of the Religious Right -- Dobson and Robertson aren't young. We may be seeing the end of an era here. Where things go, only time will tell.

He was no fan of my either, but as God grieves with his family and close friends, I will keep them in rememberance.

I was no fan of Falwell's either – indeed, that's an understatement. I pray he finds more mercy in the next world than he showed women, gays, minorities and such. However, I never wished him any harm and refuse to gloat in his passing – that's the sort of thing conservatives do. I wish his family and loved ones the best and offer my condolences.

Mervin and Greg,

I agree this is no time to gloat. I do think it appropriate to consider the legacy not just of Jerry Falwell, but of the Religious Right, of which he is probably the central figure. I too wish the blessings of God on his family and his church.
