People of Faith for Barack

I received a message today from Aaron Krager over at Faithfully Liberal alerting me to a new outreach from the Obama campaign -- one focused on people of faith. As a politically active pastor who happens to support Barack Obama, I signed up and now pass on the link to others who might be interested. Apparently Barack is the first Democratic candidate ever to create such an outreach. I've been pleased with his openness about his faith, his willingness to say that his faith influences his judgment, and his recognition that any profession of faith in a pluralistic community must be done humbly and critically.

I must confess that this openness is what first attracted me to him, but it is the way has lived out that faith and shown himself to be a leader who listens and yet has principles that has kept me on board. This is, I believe, the sign of a new day for the Democratic Party! To say that the Democratic Party is the party of secularists and non-believers doesn't pass muster. It never has, but the candidates of the party in recent years have been shy about affirming their faith. Good for Barack -- and of course Hillary and John who have also been open about faith.
