The Value of Toleration

John Locke wrote more than three centuries ago these words:

"The toleration of those that differ from others in matters of religion, is so agreeable to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to the genuine reason of mankind, that it seems monstrous for me to be so blind, as not to perceive the necessity and advantage of it, in so clear a light. " (John Locke, A Letter Concerning Toleration, Prometheus Books, 1990, p. 17).

Yeah, but Baptists and Quakers argued pre-Locke not just for toleration, but for religious LIBERTY. Toleration of another religion can still grant special privileges to the majority faith. Religious liberty requires governments to be religious neutral.

This is all about your definition of tolerance:

If by tolerance, you mean not acting like radical islamic terrorist and physically attacking those that believe in another faith, then yes of course we are called to that.

But if tolerance means that we need to ACCEPT other faiths as other equal oppurutunities to reach the goals Christians are working for, then that is a weak and unbiblical goal striving for compromise over Truth.
