A Little Hipness in our Politics

The nomination of Barack Obama is seen by many of us as marking a new day in American politics. In part it is the fact that he is the first person of color ever to be nominated for this high office. He is also representative of a new generation. Technically he is a Baby Boomer, but only by a hair. Born in the 1960s, he came of age at the end of the 70s -- a very different era, and his views of the world not only differ from John McCain, but Hillary Clinton as well.
I didn't actually see this take place, but this picture of Barack and Michelle's "Fist Bump" marks a playful symbol of the future. The Fist Bump is a common expression among contemporary sports figures, and as Obama said, marks their ability to have a bit of silliness in the midst of serious times.
Here's a little piece from Time on the history of the Fist Bump!
