A Bi-Partisan City?

Today Cheryl and I took a little road trip to the city of Jackson, Michigan. Jackson is about 90 miles from our home. It was a gorgeous day, the leaves are just beginning to change and some of the colors were quite vibrant. Who could ask for more?

Doing a bit of research on this town we'd be visiting, I discovered that it was founded in 1829 and was named after that stalwart Democrat Andrew Jackson. Jackson was elected President just a year earlier. And yet, just 25 years later Jackson, MI would become famous for hosting the founding of the Republican Party. Of course the parties were much different back then. The Republican Party was born out of the Whig Party. It was what was called a Free Soil party, a party that opposed the expansion of slavery in America. In 1860 Abraham Lincoln would be its standard bearer.

Driving around this town that hosted the founding of the Republican Party I must confess to have seen many more Obama signs than McCain ones. Could it be that the founding principles of the Republican Party have been cast aside for something very different? Would Abe Lincoln even be welcome in this new Republican Party? I wonder!!!
