Counting Down to Election Day

In just four days the agonizing march to Election Day will be over. Someone, either Barack Obama or John McCain will be the winner. The prize: An economy in shambles and a nation fighting wars on two fronts. Not much to celebrate. Indeed, whoever wins, and at this point that would seem to be Obama, will need to be up and running on day one. There will be no honeymoon, no time to get settled. I'm not sure this is the time I'd want to be President, but as Obama said, this is the time that allows a President to made a difference.

Already millions of people have voted -- some 23 million -- and long lines are expected on Tuesday. High turnout should benefit Barack Obama, but you don't count your chickens until they hatch! The polls favor Obama -- he's already ahead in sufficient states to take the electoral college -- but the votes have to be counted.

But all in all, Obama should be optimistic, even if a bit cautious at this point. But, unlike Han Solo/Indiana Jones "I have a good feeling about this!"

Bob,
Thought I would pass on a link from another famous race that had strong racial implications in my state of NC. This is easily the most famous political ad and won the election for Jesse Helms. Its also a sad indictment of my state, but its fascinating how "in your face" racial politics used to be. While we hear rumors and misquotes on each sides of what they are campaigning, its better than the unabashed politics of the past.
