Getting to the Truth about Detroit

You know, one of the realities of living in Metro-Detroit is that you get a new understanding of the realities of the US auto industry. It's hard to go anywhere and not meet or know someone connected to the auto industry. They are members of my church -- both current and retired. They may have children, parents, or siblings working in the industry -- not just the Big 3, but of suppliers or other related industries.

One of the biggest problems is that most Americans are simply ignorant about the auto makers and their vehicles. Too many Americans assume that because the US cars in the 80s weren't so good, they're still bad. Do you remember when the Honda Accord was nick named the Accordion? Of course, not, you forget that once Toyota and Honda weren't much better than the old Yugo.

Ultimately, the American people need to understand that if these auto makers fail it will effect not just Michigan, it will effect all of you.

Mark Phelan has updated a piece that appeared in November that answers the "7 Myths about Detroit Automakers." It's an important read.

I agree. If the Big 3 collapse, it will be the death of American manufacturing and a devastating blow to working families. Once the American car companies are gone, you can bet that the foreign vehicle makers will close their factories in the South and move to Mexico.
