It seems to me that only one criteria, one offered by Jesus, himself, is sufficient to bring the factions together: "Thus you will know them by their fruits." Matthew 7:15-20. This would eliminate doctrinal, theological, creedal tests that keep the parties apart. I do know that many conservatives in the Churches of Christ and Independent movement are familiar with many "seemingly righteous" individuals, but cannot accept them as equal in salvation because they were not baptized properly and believe incorrect doctrine. The liberal might reply that those with such judgmental attitudes couldn't possibly be Christian. But if the criteria is simply "Show me your faith BY YOUR WORKS," we could join in with those who are doing the works that we deem appropriate and call it Christian cooperation.

I know that some may reply, "Well, how are you REALLY going to know who is who?" It's not necessary, as we are not the judges. I recall a story coming out of the Civil War battle at Gettysburg. A burial detail was digging graves for hundreds of fallen soldiers, many of whom where so badly mangled that their side in the conflict couldn't be determined. A lieutenant reported this to the general in charge who responded, "Just bury them all together. God will sort them out later."Steve Kindlenoreply@blogger.com
