I'm reading the walking on the water and you are reading the stilling the storm. One of us has the wrong text in front of us!

Of course, I'm on vacation and am less responsible for my mistakes!Robert Cornwallhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04581876323110725024noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22980286.post-91050245984636380012011-08-05T16:00:28.068-04:002011-08-05T16:00:28.068-04:00Steve - I love your theological take, but I think ...Steve - I love your theological take, but I think your exegesis is wrong. The entire 14th chapter seems, to me, to be about setting up Jesus in a pretty cosmic and significant way. I'm not saying it is "true". I'm just saying I see a pretty high christology in the stories throughout the 14th chapter.

Granted, you're a PhD who probably knows how to read the original Greek. Still, I see a theme of a high christology in the unfolding of the narrative. Further, I think the practical message for the original audience was that Jesus of Nazareth is a messianic agent. I don't see a "Do Not Distrub" sign in this message.Brianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18396901667077846319noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22980286.post-88525864738914438022011-08-05T12:34:46.632-04:002011-08-05T12:34:46.632-04:00It's obvious to me that the whole intent of th...It's obvious to me that the whole intent of this pericope is to, as I titled my sermon, "Let Jesus Sleep!" Grow up Christians! Jesus is not the savior of last resort. Or first. The example of Jesus is to make us to be able to rise to the occasion, not depend on Jesus to make up the difference. Most readers fail to notice the "Do not disturb" sign hanging off the cushion upon which Jesus was sleeping.Steve Kindlehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16634130965524334750noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22980286.post-75049425840489423012011-08-05T07:29:42.249-04:002011-08-05T07:29:42.249-04:00I chose the gospel text for the midweek services. ...I chose the gospel text for the midweek services. I focused on the part that touches my heart the most.

When Peter became afraid and started to sink. He called out "Save me Lord!". Immediately the hand of Jesus reached out to pull him out of the storm into safety. Jesus still reaches out to us with his strong and capable hands.

When they were all in the boat, Jesus calmed the waves. It was then that the disciples collectively proclaimed "This is the Son of God". I didn't mention that this is a liturgical motif, but it sure looks like it to me.Brianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18396901667077846319noreply@blogger.com
