He wants to start that conversation, something I would like to see happen.

My assumption is that if such an ecclesiology is developed it must take into consideration the Table. So when a group, any group, believers or not, set boundaries to a common fellowship and table, they can only set boundaries on behavior towards other members of the group. As for justice, doesn't that require a group consensus? Whether or not to set boundaries and if they are to be set, where are they set? is always going to be a paradox. Perhaps this quote about tolerance can help us navigate the paradox:

“The Paradox of Tolerance disappears if you look at tolerance, not as a moral standard, but as a social contract. If someone does not abide by the terms of the contract, then they are not covered by it. In other words: The intolerant are not following the rules of the social contract of mutual tolerance. Since they have broken the terms of the contract, they are no longer covered by the contract, and their intolerance should NOT be tolerated.”
—inspired by "Tolerance is not a moral precept" by Yonatan Zunger, ZmemeZ
Al Owskihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07701248578165032890noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22980286.post-38834040829684667202024-01-31T22:36:36.970-05:002024-01-31T22:36:36.970-05:00I have been reading about Campbell and his writing...I have been reading about Campbell and his writings of late and came across your post. Thank you for a fair observation.

I was very surprised to find the hostility Campbell had towards the "Mormons". This was especially clear from Campbell's statement after Joseph Smith and his brother were murdered while in a jail under the protection of the Governor of Illinois in 1844. His statement reminded me of Saul holding the coats of those who stoned Stephen to death. Over his career, Campbell never believed the persecutions the Mormons suffered was real or so he indicated in his writings.

You are correct, in that Alexander Campbell never knew whether the B of M came from the Spaulding manuscript. However, we do know today the manuscript was not the source for the B of M. The manuscript was discovered in 1884 and published in 1885. The history of the manuscript whereabouts confirms this was the manuscript in question and is nothing close to resembling the B of M.Raynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22980286.post-77451154236515506862024-01-31T20:37:16.233-05:002024-01-31T20:37:16.233-05:00This comment has been removed by the author.Rayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01631215186219946801noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22980286.post-86965419019363849792024-01-24T10:06:23.488-05:002024-01-24T10:06:23.488-05:00Thanks Steve! There's is a few books out, Mark Charles,Navajo Christian, come to mind- about ( finally) de- colonizing Christianity. Quite a few people really despise American Christianity, for it's materialism, love of " things and possessions" over people. As well as glad- handing the rich, and being hierarchical and White/ Anglo Supremacists. I hate to say this, but as a history buff, I found the writings and attitudes of the Pilgrims and Puritans so offensive, their justification on slavery and genocide- which NO true Christian can commit, and be in right standing with God( murder, coveting, kidnapping)yet there are so many American Christian authors out there, who laud those monsters from the past ! As a first generation American, this all makes my hair stand on end. I could never admire such creeps ! Anyone with a brain, knows Christians go about with the Gospel, winning converts to Jesus, starting churches, then moving on. Not the mayhem of colonists and slavers. I haven't celebrated Thanksgiving in 30+ years. No regrets. I have the same great food, for Native American Day, and other holidays, though. Point being, the meanness in the American Church must be purged out, including meanness to children, women, the poor. Heck, single people aren't welcome in most churches. The author highlights the invitation and subsequent rejection by those originally invited, drawing connections to the rejection of Jesus by religious and political elites. The portrayal of divine wrath and judgment raises questions about reconciling this aspect with a gospel of grace and mercy. The inclusion of the uninvited guest without a wedding robe emphasizes the importance of honoring holy occasions. Overall, this reflection invites readers to contemplate the dynamics of invitation, response, judgment, and acceptance in the context of God's kingdom.
