Our derailed train, note the buckled piece of track to the left!! |
What a day it was. Cheryl and I were heading home from a fun weekend in Chicago. We took off on time, early this morning. We stopped in Niles, MI on an nice sunny day, and then just two miles out of the station, something happened, a switch (that's our diagnosis) didn't hold and we found ourselves barreling down a side track, which buckled and blew apart, the train going off the rails, though staying upright. We missed hitting a bunch of box cars just ahead by a matter of feet.
We survived -- no injuries for us -- though a few on the train sustained a few. Fortunately we were close to Niles, MI and the fire department and the police department came out to rescue us. We were finally bused back to Niles in school buses and then after another hour or so we were put on another bus heading west, never really hearing the full story from Amtrak.

Now, I don't want to say anything bad about train travel. Accidents happen, and it did for us today. It was a bit scary -- the train rocking back and forth, dirt and debris flying up in the air on both sides.
I don't have any spiritual wisdom to dispense -- just glad we're home safe and sound, and that the same is true for most if not all the passengers.
I'm just grateful for the grace to continue on with the journey.
