Advent Begins

The Christmas rush began around November 1st. That's All Saints Day, but since Christmas now seems to follow Halloween, as soon as the candy was off the shelves, the tinsel made its way onto the same shelves.

Blogger Mystical Seeker recently posted as to why he hates Advent -- mostly because of his frustrations with the "mythical" parts of the Christian faith. But as a pastor, I greatly appreciate the season, for without it the crush of consumerism would overwhelm Christmas. As it is now, we seem burned out by Christmas even before the day. Advent is that buffer, like Lent is for Easter, that keeps us focused. I've posted already the sermon I'll preach tomorrow both here and on my sermon blog -- Words of Welcome.

There is an article in today's LA Times that speaks to the importance of Advent to the church. Each of the persons quoted finds in this season an opportunity to step back and breath in the presence of God. Like me they see it as that needed breaker, one that makes the message of Christmas stand out more clearly. And what is that message? That God has chosen to become present in this world of ours, to share our humanity, and bring to us reconciliation. Christmas really isn't about the presents and all. But having said that -- I like having a party just like everyone else. But as they say, first things first.

And if you're looking for some pre-Christmas reading -- well there's always Marcus Borg and Dominic Crossan's new book -- The First Christmas from HarperOne, which of course you can buy here. See, even I can't help but enter into the consumer spirit!
