Bush Disses Detroit

Isn't it comforting that the President has finally acknowledged that we're in a recession. But his comments on the auto companies are disgraceful. He has essentially chosen to abandon one of America's few remaining manufacturing sectors. I'm not a militarist, but isn't it unwise militarily to abandon the maker of our cars and trucks to Japan? I'm just wondering.

But to say that we shouldn't help Detroit because we just don't know if they'll survive is to give up. All three companies are willing, along with UAW to make the necessary changes. Ford is especially ahead of the curve on this. But the car companies are so intertwined that if one fails, that could pull everyone down -- and throw America into not just a recession, but a serious depression.

George, let me ask you, have you looked at the broader consequences? The tax payer is going to end up paying a whole lot more if these companies fail than if we invest some money up front to make sure that they not only survive, but thrive. Good gracious, this is just not appropriate. And to the American people, wake up! You talk about patriotism, and wave a flag. This is about the American worker and the American economy. We bailed out Wall Street, now it's Main Street that's in trouble.

Although it's true that we have only one President at a time, I think it's time for Barack Obama to call up GW and say, hey, I'm going to inherit your mess in a few weeks. Let's get this going so it does go from the frying pan into the fire!!!

Mark Zandi testified that it make take $125 BILLION to bailout the autos in the long run. If he is right and there are 1.1 million factory workers, we could simply mail each one a check for $113,000!! Or we could mail a $50k check to the 2.5 million people effected. Not a bad severance..

Bottom line.. we HAVE to shut down at least one and probably two manufacturers. The average annual rate of cars sold is now 10-11 million vs 17 million. We don't have the demand for all three!

He also said that if they fail the cost to the government would be many times that amount. In fact, he said it wouldn't be in the same universe. It's important to hear the whole thing.

George W. Bush's Presidency has been the most hostile ever to American workers. Bill Clinton did us no favors with his support of free trade deals and further deregulation but Bush has helped to bring our standard of living to a new low. The free market policies of the past 27 years are destroying the middle class. Our nation must have a fundamental change in economic direction if we are to survive.
