The Pope Speaks on Evolution and Creation

As reported in an Ethics Daily piece by Francis X. Rocca, the Pope has said that Darwin's theory of natural selection can't completely explain the origins of life -- which he puts in the hands of the Creator. At the same time he says that faith can't replace science -- in other words, dismissing the God of the Gaps pseudo-science of Intelligent Design.
This seems to me to be logical enough and fitting with my own understandings. If, science is as scientists suggest, looking for natural explanations for natural phenomenon, then scientific inquiry and theological inquiry are separate paths. Yet science isn't able to explain everything, but neither can theology. So, we need each other, as long as we don't step on each other's toes.
Update:
An article at Yahoo News states more explicitly the Pope's endorsement of Theistic Evolution -- something that I personally am quite comfortable with. Benedict is not comfortable with God-of-the-gaps philosophy (ID) but does believe that the evolutionary process does possess a rationality that suggests something beyond random selection. By and large, from what I've read so far, I don't think Benedict and I are that different on this issue. And he refrains from giving his imprimatur to Intelligent Design.

I am not clear exactly on how the Pope thinks that God steered the evolutionary process, but I am glad to hear that he seems to reject ID.

One of the reasons that I like process theology is that it offers an explanation for the process of evolution that involves God without resorting to such things as Intelligent Design.
