Obama and the Bigots

Nicholas Kristoff offers an excellent piece today concerning the "whispering campaign" against Barack Obama. The charges are that he is secretly a Muslim and that he will somehow impose on us as a nation Sharia or worse. Yesterday, Congressman Steve King of Iowa suggested that electing Obama would mean that the terrorists had won. Now, King maybe a right wing nutcase, but he speaks for a lot of people.
Obama has been clear that he is a Christian and has also shared that he has Muslim ancestry, though his father was non-religious. He did spend time in Indonesia, but didn't study at a Madrassa. There are those who feel he should speak more clearly about how he views Islam, but that might be politically dangerous -- that is -- he could say" "So what if I were?" But if he were to say that, even though in my mind its not an issue, it likely would end his race.
Kristoff rightly says that both Clinton and McCain need to come out and explicitly put an end to the rumors, call on their supporters to stop them, and to renounce the bigotry involved -- without any unfortunate caveats like Hillary gave -- "as far as I know."
It's an excellent piece that needs to be considered -- click here to read on.
