“Kill the Indian in the Child” - Sightings (Martin Marty)
When a particular culture is inextricably linked to faith, problems emerge. Perhaps even evil will emerge. Looking back over the centuries since the European "discovery" of the Americas, thoughtful observers will recognize the damage done in the name of civilization. Looking back now, we see many horrendous implications from European/Christian contact with indigenous peoples -- here in North America and elsewhere. Some nations, like Canada, are in the process of looking back so as to look forward. I'm not sure the same can be said for the United States. In fact, it's likely that we're in a position right now to go backwards, without any thought for the present or future. Martin Marty looks at the Canadian attempts to address the damage done by a policy known as "kill the Indian in the child," and the theological grounding of that policy. As we continue our Independence Week observance, it is fitting to consider our past as Martin Marty briefly unfolds it.
