A Movement of Wholeness

Last night our General Minister and President, Sharon Watkins, spoke to the General Assembly. It was the third night, and the message was still one of wholeness in a fractured world. She spoke of the dichotomy that stands between the message of Genesis and that of our world. The message of the world is one of scarcity -- and thus of self-serving selfishness (survival of the fittest you might say) -- and that of Genesis, which is one of God's gracious abundance. Now, you might say, that the facts on the ground may support the idea of scarcity -- but only if we hoard and destroy and well you know. But, if we consider the other, the needs of the other, then there is abundance -- including an abundance of opportunity for health care for all.

While the texts the previous nights had come from the opening chapters of Genesis, Sharon spoke from John 17, Jesus' message of unity as he faced the cross, and wove the story of the Disciples of the Congo, a movement of great strength in a very poor and oppressed land with our own situation. Ours is to be a circle of unity, she told us.

The challenge put to us was simple -- With God our Creator being a source of abundance, ready to be shared, what will we do as church? We have the opportunity to make a difference, to be agents of wholeness -- will we take up the call?

That is the question!
