What role does religion and faith stories --whether they can be proven or not -- in forming one's identity? Martin Marty writes here about the way in which Native Americans -- specifically Navajos -- are attracted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. In part it has to do with the aggressiveness of LDS evangelism, but more than that it has to do with the fact that Native Americans figure prominently in Mormon Scriptures.
As Marty notes, the issue here isn't whether LDS Scriptures fit with science or history, but the in which Native Americans are finding hope in a story that includes them. Take a read, offer your thoughts.
