Religion and violence do go together. Mark Juergensmeyer, a professor at UCSB, wrote a book entitled Terror in the Mind of God: The Global Rise of Religious Violence that is in its third edition. Juergensmeyer reminds us that no religion is free from the taint of violence. On the other hand, religions have been at the forefront of peace and justice. You might imagine a world without religion, but it's unlikely that world would be free from violence. There would just be different idols. Martin Marty takes up the subject of religion and violence as we watch a new extremist version of Islam is taking over large swathes of Iraq. As the Muslim world observes Ramadan, Marty reminds us that there are Muslims that are pursuing peace and justice -- and we need to celebrate them! Take a read, and offer your thoughts.
