A Mormon President?

I find the debate about whether a Mormon is qualified to be President quite interesting. That 37% of Americans say they wouldn't vote for a Mormon, and with the view that such numbers are therefore low, is quite interesting. Apparently this number is higher than with either a Black candidate or a woman candidate. Therefore, even as the LDS Church has sought to make itself more and more mainstream, there remain questions about the influence of its "different" theology on the policies of its political office holders. Susan Estrich writes an interesting column on this.

Remember that such Senate luninaries as Orrin Hatch and Harry Reid are Mormons. Mitt Romney's own father was a Moderate Republican, of the Jerry Ford variety, who opposed Barry Goldwater -- who now looks moderate mainstream in comparison to some Social Conservatives within the GOP.
