Hairspray -- A Review

If you've not seen Hairspray, starring John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Christopher Walken, Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, and Nikki Blonsky as Tracy Turnblad, you must do so. The music is great, the acting is great, and the message is powerful.

Yes, the message. I knew that the movie would deal with issues of fitting in, but I didn't realize that there is a strong message about racism as well. It is a call to cross barriers, to see people in new ways, and to welcome them into our lives.

John Travolta is really over the top funny as Tracy's obese mother Edna and Christopher Walken is great as well. Michelle Pfeiffer is evil (as is Brittany Snow). And Nikki, she really does steal the show -- and that takes some doing to steal it away from Travolta.

Anyway, go see it, enjoy it, and cheer for those who will dream impossible dreams and even break down the barriers of society along the way! Yes, this is a feel good movie, but hey, we need a bit of that sometime. And it also pushes us to do something, to get involved, even when society says to us our voice isn't needed.
