Dobson, GOP, and the Future

What does the future hold for the GOP and its Conservative Christian allies? We have a recent op-ed piece by E.J. Dionne that suggests that many Evangelicals are moving away from Culture War rhetoric and action and broadening the circle of the moral debate. Then we had that recent Jim Dobson op-ed piece that said that if a pro-abortion candidate was nominated conservative Christians wouldn't vote for him (no her is running in the GOP lineup).
Then I came across this from Dobson's Focus on the Family CitizenLink site, which claims that in a NY Times poll 60% of Evangelicals claim to support Dobson's position on the election-- Here's a tidbit
Nearly 60 percent of those who plan to vote in the primaries said they could not support a candidate they didn't agree with on issues such as abortion and same-sex marriage. Eighty-six percent said presidential candidates should be judged on both their political record and their personal life.
So my question is -- if the Religious Right has clout in the GOP, why is Rudy ahead? And why haven't the Evangelicals coalesced behind a more acceptable candidate? Odd isn't it?
