Rock and Roll and the Margins

Cheryl and I spent part of Saturday at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. Had a great time -- interesting place, at least if you're into Rock and Roll in all its forms. I'm not a hard rocker -- no Aerosmith or Kiss or the like. Although Neil Young rocks with the best of them, the tone seems different to me.

But something that caught my ear while there came in a set of films that you can view near the beginning of the "tour." The comment was made that many of those who became rock and roll stars were -- except for their music -- outsiders, more marginal kinds of folks. It was only in their music that they came alive and found people attracted to them. No one better epitomizes this than Janis Joplin, who notes that she had essentially been run out of her hometown. The sad thing in all of this is that Janis Joplin grew up in a Disciples of Christ church (as did John Dillinger, but that's another story). Of course there were those people who didn't live on the margins, but many did, and music became their outlet.

Maybe that's the way it is for the artist in our midst. Perhaps they need to be on the margins to find a creative outlet. I don't know what to make of it, but it was an interesting comment.

Janis was a saint.
It's as simple as that.
So was Hendrix, so was Jim M.
So was XXXX. Love their experience.

The music has not let us down.

Love to Pat and the whole chorus.

I'm feeling brave, and it won’t go away.

So, to the 6 or so that read this...

I need to apologize for my sappy posts last night.
Someone got a little too uninhibited.

If fact, my stomach and head confirmed I overdid it. I went from 2 packs a day smoking to zero last July.
I guess I’m compensating a bit too much with this other vice. I was always so careful about drinking when I was younger too. I guess that younger guy was a bit wiser in that department.

I’ll try to continue to be naturally uninhibited. I’m sorry if I offended anyone.

Maybe I can get some of these new lbs off at the same time.
