It is fitting that on the day that I depart for England, where I plan to walk through some very old cathedrals and even worship in them, Martin Marty speaks to the transience of certain cathedralistic visions -- that of the Crystal Cathedral, which is now the cathedral church for the diocese of Orange, California. Years ago, I was visiting with a friend who was then on the ministerial staff at the Crystal Cathedral. They were in the process of building a memorial wall for interring ashes. Dick said to me -- well at least we know where Bob (Schuller) will be buried. As it turns out that likely won't happen, and all those walk of faith stones that Schuller sold -- they're coming up as well. Nothing lasts forever, as Martin Marty points out speaking here of finitude, contingency, and transience -- things we will all face in time!
