Public Education and the Common Good: Is It Wrong to Send Your Child to Private School? -- Sightings
I am the product of the Public School system, as is my wife and my son. We got reasonably good educations. My wife spent quite a number of years teaching in private schools -- both evangelical Christian and Roman Catholic. I can see the benefits of both -- and if both are equal then choosing public seems to make financial sense. But in this essay the question is raised about whether or not the common good demands that parents place their children in public schools in pursuit of the common good -- even if that is to the detriment of their children.
The essay raises interesting questions that are worth considering, including the purpose of public education. The author even brings Thomas Aquinas into the conversation! I invite you to read and respond - especially if you are the parent of school age children!
