Growing Pains and the Creation-Evolution Debate

What can you say about ABC's choice of debating partners -- an actor and some guy I've never heard of versus a couple of rabid atheists debating God and Creation. As a Christian I get tired of having people like Kirk Cameron or Pat Robertson represent me. I mean, give me a break, there are great theologian/scientists out there like John Polkinghorne. Have them discuss these issues with people like E.O. Wilson, people willing to have a sane discussion. But no we're given Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort who make fools of themselves trying to defend Creationism. Even young earthers should be embarrassed.
Becky Garrison has given her in person account for God's Politics, and she mentions her own embarrassment.

Even though the atheists failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that God could not have been the spark that set all of creation, they seem to have nailed this debate when Cameron pulled out the get-out-of-hell card. Simply put, this was “what you believe about God will determine where you spend eternity.” At this point, if I wasn’t covering this event, I would have crawled out of the church in shame. While this is supposed to be an ABC news program, I felt like I had entered a rather lame taping of Saturday Night Live instead. I honestly felt that at any moment Cameron was going to demonstrate the Church Lady’s Superiority Dance.

Yes, the Church Lady would be better than Kirk!!! He wasn't a great actor -- "Kirk Cameron, you're no Michael J. Fox!" He's even less a theologian.

Oh, I'm fed up with this, too. This idea that putting two extreme voices on TV and letting them duke it out is "balanced" or in any way edifying just has to go.

Especially since as we've discussed in comments to your previous posts, neither extreme is getting at the real issues, which are bad theologies on our side that make evolution the enemy and scientism among neo-Darwinians that threatens the legitimate work of good scientists. But that conversation doesn't sell ads for SUVs or toothpaste. :-)

I'm pissed off but I can't help laughing at this.

It is really too funny to get mad at, thinking that Mike Seaver was a theologian -- Ben, maybe!

I will definitely be watching tonight. Although, I do have an issue though that their approach is to argue without using the Bible. To argue simply with reason as the foundation is to concede that reason is the sole arbiter of what is true or false. I think that this approach is a critical mistake. Bill from ProvocativeChurch

Hi Pastor Bob,
I thought I`d leave a quick comment. Well, actually two.
Firstly, desist your impulse to call your ideological other side rabid atheists. Or I`d have to taunt you as a whiny christian, which is not only rude, but doesn`t serve the interest of a civiliced debate.
Secondly, your complaint that Mr. Comfort and Mr. Cameron are an inferior represantation of the christian side is futile. Team WoM came into that position because they challenged Team RRS via ABC to a debate.
May I sugest that you do likewise? Challange Mr. Comfort and Mr. Cameron to a debate, wether or not they are "true" christian represantatives.
Should you choose to remain silent... well, don`t be surprised that atheists will step in and fill the void.

Falk,

When I say "rabid atheists" I don't mean all atheists are rabid, just some. And as far as Kirk and Ray, I guess they have their right to the airwaves, I'm just tired of the networks letting them represent the Christian community. Their presentations are an embarrassment. I'm sure the Atheist community has its embarrassments also! But, I needn't debate them -- I think I've called them out and suggested other better debating partners.

I just read your blog article on the debate and was absolutely appauled at your lack of support for our fellow christians making a stand for God. God will equip those who are called.

And to say you never heard of Ray Comfort only shows your ignorance as he is the person behind The Way Of The Master evangelism series which is very popular and sucessful. Kirk and Ray were perfect for the job and they did a good one at that so Thank God for it.

Shame on you calling yourself a pastor yet bagging out fellow Christian's making a stand for God.
