Remembering a Ministry

It is always a blessing to bring a ministry to an end on an up note. Yesterday First Christian Church of Lompoc celebrated my ministry among them. I still had to preach -- a sermon I had a difficult time getting started (got just a bit choked up) -- but ended by singing Happy Trails! The congregation threw a party -- "Foot Prints in the Sand" -- with great tri-tip and more. There was a PowerPoint presentation and some more presentations (yes -- a nice monetary gift).

I didn't know how I would experience my final Sunday. My last ministry ended awkwardly on Christmas Eve -- no party, no celebration, just a quiet ending. This time was different. Although our numbers didn't increase the spirit of openness and optimism changed dramatically. I don't know who they will call as pastor, but my successor will inherit a congregation that is full of love -- they are enmeshed in the positive sense. This is truly a family, with all the dysfunctions but also all the joys of family relationships. What makes this family sort of unique is that it's a very inclusive one. Just dare to draw in close, and you're in. There aren't the barriers one finds in other similar places.

I'm excited about what comes next, but I am truly just a bit sad about leaving such a wonderful and loving community. But, that is what I needed so I could take on the next challenge!

So, here, the day after, I salute First Christian Church of Lompoc. I will never forget you, and I pray God's blessings on your ministries!
