After Evangelicalism -- An Academy of Parish Clergy Conversation with David Gushee

Each year the Academy of Parish Clergy, an organization that I serve as editor of the journal Sharing the Practice, sponsors a Book of the Year Award. The Academy honors one particular book, along with ten others, which the committee, which I chair, believe are most worthy to be read by clergy. As you can imagine, this isn't an easy task. This past year we named David Gushee's book After Evangelicalism: The Path to a New Christianity (Westminster John Knox Press, 2020) to that Top Ten List. Yesterday afternoon (October 13, 2021), a group of us from the Academy plus a couple of guests had the opportunity to engage with David's important book that speaks to the angst of many who consider themselves or (like me) have considered themselves Evangelicals at the direction White Evangelicalism has taken. Many have left or are leaving and do not know where to go. David offers a most helpful response that provides a pathway to a new way of being Christian. In the book, he addresses many of the issues of the day including racism, politics, and sex. You can find my review of the book here on Ponderings on a Faith Journey.

As one of the participants in the conversation, I was able to set the book in its larger context that includes his important book that deals with the church and LGBTQ folks --- Changing Our Mind (Front Edge). I invite you to listen as David addresses the question of what it means to be post-evangelical. The conversation lasts about an hour, but the time spent is worth it. This conversation was recorded on Zoom and streamed live on Facebook.  If you want more information about what David is doing, you can check out his website:  https://davidpgushee.com/
