Let the Swiftboating Begin!

It's just one more day until the nation decides who will be President. Although John McCain has chosen not to talk about Jeremiah Wright, that doesn't mean the GOP is eschewing this tactic. Some GOP group is running anti-Obama commercials here in Michigan -- the only McCain-Palin ads on the air -- that seek to link Obama to Wright in order to cast him as a radical and a risky bet.

With no real message, the Republicans can only suggest that Obama is an unsafe choice. Now that they have an inexperienced celebrity on their own side, they must attack him as a pall of terrorists, a socialist, and of course the dupe of a radical black preacher. Part of the Wright effort is designed to appeal to undecided white Democrats. Knowing that there is a residual racism in the country, if it can tap into just a bit of that racism could turn a state or two. It's unlikely to turn Michigan, but it could cut into his margin.

It is unfortunate that the GOP has taken this route. Yes the Democrats have engaged in their own slight of hand tactics, but this is the only message that the GOP has to offer.

Tomorrow, however, I do trust that Americans by and large will look at the candidates and vote for the one they think will best lead us, and that they will put aside the challenges to character that are out there.
