Lining Up the Constitution with the Word of God

There is a belief held by some that religious pluralism is not a good thing, that Christians need to assert their voices in such a way that they can steer the nation back on a Christian course. Sometimes we call this living according to "Judeo-Christian values." While McCain and others speak of those Judeo-Christian values, Mike Huckabee seems intent on focusing even more narrowly on Christian values -- in such a way that it would exclude other perspectives (or so it seems).

One of the differences between Fundamentalism/Conservative Evangelical perspectives and most Mainline positions concerns the matter of interpretation. For many on the right there is no such thing as interpretation, there is simply what the bible says and there can be no room for disagreement.

That leads Mike to take the unfortunate position of trying to align the Constitution with a narrow interpretation of Scripture. I will argue forcefully for my interpretation of Scripture, but at the end of the day I must confess that it is my interpretation and I must respect your right to read and responsibly discern a position yourself.

Although he was really speaking about abortion and gay rights (I still don't agree with him), this kind of speech shows that, despite his personal manner and economic populism, Huckabee is really far right. He has ties to Reconstructionism. He is a theocrat and the idea of electing him president is extremely scary.

Many liberals and progressives want him to become the GOP nominee because they think he can be beaten easily. I am not so sanguine. I think we need to work hard to stop him, now.
