Mr Spock Says Yes to Obama

The key to discerning who to vote for in the upcoming election can be found in the identities of celebrity supporters and endorsers.

Of course we know that Chuck Norris -- AKA "Walker Texas Ranger" -- is a big Huckabee fan, but did you know that Wilford Brimley is a McCainite? It's true.

On the Demcratic side, we know that Babs (Barbara Streisand) has endorsed Hillary and Oprah, well she's an Obama Girl. But as I read today in the LA Times, in Tina Daunt's Column "What's Primary: bucks, backers," Hillary and Obama are in a race not just for Hollywood bucks, but Hollywood endorsements.

Tina's column notes that Obama has many of the up and comers like Scarlett Johannsen and Will Smith (though he had some A-listers like George Clooney). Others in his camp include:

Some other A-list hotties, hipsters and legends in Obama's camp include David Geffen, Jada Pinkett Smith, Eddie Murphy, Sidney Poitier, Cindy Crawford, Jennifer Aniston, Tyra Banks, Halle Berry, Zach Braff, Morgan Freeman, Bruce Hornsby, Lakers coach Phil Jackson, Michael Jordan, Cedric "The Entertainer" Kyles, Ellen Pompeo, Edward Norton, Leonard Nimoy, Jamie Foxx, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Natalie Maines, Rob Morrow and Forest Whitaker.

Now I don't know if you caught that list, but parked in the middle of it is none other than Mr. Spock -- AKA Leonard Nimoy. You have to be of a certain age, I supposes, but to have Mr. Spock endorsing you is a big deal. I don't know who Captain Kirk or even Captain Picard will endorse (Anyway, Picard is a Frenchman with a British accent -- I think). And of course in that list is at least one Black actor who has already played a president. Indeed, he's played God -- Morgan Freeman. How can you say no to Oprah and Morgan Freeman and Mr. Spock. Now there's a political trinity!!!
Hillary, of course, has her supporters:

Clinton's celebrity ranks include Magic Johnson and some of the entertainment industry's most respected veterans: Steven Spielberg, Quincy Jones, Clarence Avant and Rob Reiner. There are also a number of mega-money men such as Haim Saban, Steve Bing, Alan Horn, Ron Burkle and Jack Abernethy and a list of longtime Clinton loyalists (Barbra Streisand, Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen).

Others making donations to Clinton include Joely Fisher, Ed Helms, Danny DeVito, Fran Drescher, Vivica Fox, Joanna Kerns and Marla Maples.

It's hard to say no to Magic, Spielberg and Danny DeVito, but they're not Spock or Oprah or Morgan Freeman!

There are, according to Tina, a number of celebrities who have yet to join up with the top two Democrats. The big question is -- where will West Wing's Martin Sheen go? Stay tuned!

Post-NH I have reluctantly abandoned Edwards for Obama, but it is worth noting that Edwards has his share of celebs, too: Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon, Rev. Jesse Jackson (although Jesse Jackson, Jr. is going for Obama), Jackson Brown, and Sean Penn, to name a few.

I don't know that Celebs do much more than help a candidate get a hearing. People vote for people for all kinds of weird reasons, but does anyone vote based on which celeb endorses whom? In '04 Willie Nelson was a big Kucinich supporter, but it didn't help much.

However, I do think Democrats have cooler celebs than the GOP.

Yes, the question is -- where will Edwards' celebrities go?

As for Willie Nelson -- he's no Spock!
