Yesterday I sat down for an interview with my publisher Henry Neufeld, dealing with the topic of Christianity and politics. My interview is one of three that were done with other Energion authors who represent both a conservative Republican position and what might be considered an attempt to distance faith from politics. You might call that a Hauerwasian turn. In any case, this is my response to the questions. I address the role of faith and public life in my book Faith in the Public Square, and in a somewhat different way in my book Ultimate Allegiance, which is a reflection on the Lord's Prayer. Both were published a few years back by Energion Publications.
Below is the interview in the form of a Youtube Video. In invite you to watch, and then get yourself informed to vote on Tuesday---or don't complain about the political situation.
Haggai 1:15b-2:9 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) 1:15b In the second year of King Darius, 2:1 in the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by the prophet Haggai, saying: 2 Speak now to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, and say, 3 Who is left among you that saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Is it not in your sight as nothing? 4 Yet now take courage, O Zerubbabel, says the Lord; take courage, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest; take courage, all you people of the land, says the Lord; work, for I am with you, says the Lord of hosts, 5 according to the promise that I made you when you came out of Egypt. My spirit abides among you; do not fear. 6 For thus says the Lord of hosts: Once again, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land; 7 and I will shake all the nations,…
Isaiah 11:1-10 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) 11 A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse,
and a branch shall grow out of his roots. 2 The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him,
the spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the spirit of counsel and might,
the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. 3 His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see,
or decide by what his ears hear; 4 but with righteousness he shall judge the poor,
and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;
he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,
and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the
wicked. 5 Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist,
and faithfulness the belt around his loins. 6 The wolf shall live with the lamb,
the leopard shall lie down with the kid,
the calf and the lion and the fatling together,
and a little child shall lead them. 7 The cow and the bear shall graze,
their young shall lie dow…
Matthew 3:1-12 (Common English Bible) 3 In those days John the Baptist appeared in the desert of Judea announcing, 2 “Change your hearts and lives! Here comes the kingdom of heaven!” 3 He was the one of whom Isaiah the prophet spoke when he said: The voice of one shouting in the wilderness,
“Prepare the way for the Lord; make his paths straight.” 4 John wore clothes made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist. He ate locusts and wild honey. 5 People from Jerusalem, throughout Judea, and all around the Jordan River came to him. 6 As they confessed their sins, he baptized them in the Jordan River. 7 Many Pharisees and Sadducees came to be baptized by John. He said to them, “You children of snakes! Who warned you to escape from the angry judgment that is coming soon? 8 Produce fruit that shows you have changed your hearts and lives. 9 And don’t even think about saying to yourselves, Abraham is our father. I tell you that God is able to raise up Abraham’s children from t…
