Second Thoughts about the Second Coming -- Ready to Launch

Ron Allen and I had a conversation over breakfast one morning in 2019 about writing a book together. That seemed like a great idea, but about what? Since Ron had recently seen the publication of a commentary on the Book of Revelation and I knew that one of the big questions on the minds of many folks in our churches had to do with what the future held. Perhaps they had read one of the Left Behind books and wanted to know if this was the biblical perspective? They asked the question because they heard little about such things from the pulpit. They were seeking answers, but where should they look. So, I proposed we write a book about eschatology. So began the journey.

The book which is now available in many sectors and officially launches next Tuesday (February 28th) provides an overview of the biblical, historical, and contemporary conversations about such things. We address the millennial theories and the afterlife. We provide tools for the conversation in our churches (we created a study guide). The folks from Westminster John Knox Press, starting with our editor Bob Ratcliff, helped us hone a book that speaks to the questions being asked. While both Ron and I have our own perspectives on these questions we wanted to treat the various positions honestly and respectfully, so that the reader can discern what makes the most sense to them.

So, I invite you to check out our book:  Second Thoughts about the Second Coming: Understanding the End Times, Our Future, and Christian Hope, (Westminster John Knox Press, 2023).

This is what Sharon Watkins, the former General Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) has to say about our book.
