Worshipping with Jazz

I'm a big Jazz fan and would love to do worship in a Jazz idiom. Of course you need musicians who can do the music in order to have such a thing. Jazz isn't the easiest music to learn and play, but it is wonderful when done well. I sang in a high school jazz choir and my son has played sax in high school jazz bands, but neither of us are ready to lead such a thing.
Although contemporary -- read pop music -- services are plentiful jazz ones aren't. But today's LA Times tells about several interesting forms of worship using Dixieland, Jazz and even polka. These aren't, apparently for everyone, but they do draw people in. One of those services is a Dixieland Mass held at a Roman Catholic Church in Encino. Dale Jergensen is the composer-in-residence at St. Cyril of Jerusalem Catholic Church.
A few have been offended, but most have a good time. The question in all of this is whether worship can be too joyful. The Psalms talk about making a joyful noise to the Lord, but can we be too joyous? Does worship have to be solemn to be reverent?
Like I said, I like Jazz and so I think it's worth the risk to bring joy to the hearts of worshippers. I've been praying for a guitar player to drop into our church, now I think I'll pray for some jazz players as well!
