America -- Not as Religious today as yesterday!

Even as the day's headlines include the shooting of a pastor during his sermon, they also include the most recent report on the state of religion in America. Although much is made of the influence of religion on politics, the influence of religion in American life is quickly eroding. The latest figures suggest that nationwide 15% of Americans have no religious preference or affiliation. This is the fastest growing segment of the population -- growing from 8.6% less than 20 years ago. And in places like the Northeast, its becoming trendy. In recent years the heartland of Puritanism, has surpassed the always irreligious Pacific Northwest, with Vermont leading the pack. Yes, the home of Ethan Allen, now counts 34% of its population as non-religious.

Among Christians the fastest growing communities are those who either claim to be non-denominational or make little emphasis on their denominational background. Indeed, churches go to great lengths to hide their affiliation. Of course, being a Disciple, our typical church name is so generic that many people are surprised to learn that we're part of a denomination.

This trend shows no sign of dissipating. So, what is the future of the church? Of religion in general? After all, even the trendy groups seem to be leveling off.
