Learning from Evangelicals -- Transforming Theology

Philip Clayton speaks in this clip about what he/we can learn from evangelicals. I didn't know this, but he is a graduate (as is Diana Butler Bass) of Westmont College. He speaks of the lessons learned from evangelicalism for mainline progressive churches. As one formed within the evangelical tradition -- educated at one of the foremost evangelical institutions in the world (Fuller Theological Seminary), I find this very helpful.

The key things we can learn include:

1. The belief that Scripture is relevant

2. They believe in the corporate presence of God in their organizations so as to transform society.

3. They're not embarrassed by their passion about their faith and ability to impact society.

Clayton notes that if mainliners don't have that same passion about their faith, then they (we) have little hope for the future. I do think we have much to learn from evangelicals, even if the way we formulate things will be different. Indeed, my congregation's emphasis on being missional is rooted in evangelical understandings -- but we will develop it differently!
