An About Face In Iran?

The situation in Iran remains fluid, tense, and unclear. There has been protests occurring throughout the weekend. The current President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has been acting as if none of this is occurring, that the protests are the work of a few disgruntled persons egged on by foreign agitators. But while he may be clueless, perhaps the person at the top, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei may be paying attention.

After declaring the elections fair and a divine sign on Saturday morning, after election results were rushed out, he appears to have agreed to have allegations of election fraud examined by the Guardian Council. Now, whether or not they will change the election outcome or declare a second round of voting remains to be seen. While Khamenei is Supreme Leader and has almost absolute power, the Guardian Council has the power to depose him. Perhaps they have encouraged him reconsider. We don't know at this point how this will turn out. I learned last night on CNN that Khamenei and Mir Hussein Mousavi are related -- distant cousins -- and that Mousavi was Premier during Khamenei's presidency in the 1980s.

With foreign countries raising questions about the legitimacy of the outcome -- even if done cautiously -- and with unrest brewing in the country, the situation could quickly change. We watch prayerfully and hopefully, hoping that the Iranian people will have the freedom they desire.

This is really awesome. They're asking. "Where is my vote"?
No signs of submission yet.
