Chuck Colson's Venomous Attacks on Islam

I long ago lost respect for Chuck Colson. There was a time, back when he was out there advocating Prison Reform, that I saw him as a voice reclaimed by grace. But in recent years he's become a divisive and vindictive voice.
Well, he was apparently a keynote speaker at the latest SBC convention (We have Jim Wallis coming to ours). And he took on the twin evils of our day -- Islam and Neo-Atheism. His views of Islam are at best distorted and at worst a call to arms in a "crusade" against the Islamic world. To call Islam a "vicious evil" that must be confronted by Christians will do little to help build bridges. Unfortunately as well these statements will get broadcast in the Islamic world and will give further support to the view that the war in Iraq is a war against Islam on the part of the Christian west. As a result the resistance will harden. Not smart Mr. Colson. Opponents of the war in Iraq are derided for undermining the troops; think again -- its people like Chuck!
A wrap up of Colson's remarks and the surprising announcement of a new series jointly authored with Rick Warren is found in this Ethic's Daily piece by Bob Allen.

That is too bad. His jailhouse conversion after Watergate seemed to serve lead him to becoming a positive voice for a genuinely remorseful and repentent Christianity that rejected the government corruption he had been a part of. But now he just seems like another spokesman for a shrill, intolerant brand of Christianity.

He and Christopher Hitchens make for strange bedfellows when it comes to hating Islam.

Islam is a false and violent religion. Perhaps Colson is intolerant of people who fly jets into office buildings or those who strap bombs to six-year-olds and tell them to walk into crowded markets.

Christians should hate a religion that teaches only hatred and death, which is exactly what Islam does.
