Mitt Romney's Religious Woes

Mitt Romney's candidacy for president has brought to the surface lingering doubts about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, better known as the Mormons. A front page LA Times story highlights Romney's troubles in South Carolina. Though leading polls in Iowa and New Hampshire, he faces continued doubts about his "faith" by many evangelicals. The polls show that 1 in 3 will not vote for him because he's a Mormon.

Again, I must say that I'm not a Romney fan, but to say you won't vote for him because God won't be talking to him is simply silly and contrary to our founding governing principles that make religious tests anathema. We're not electing Joseph Smith here! I don't think Mitt is any more a theocrat than is Harry Reid, another prominent LDS politician!

So, weigh the policies and positions. Yes, faith is a component -- but it is the fruit not the dogma that is key here!

Great points,
I just wanted to comment on a line about God not talking to him in the WH. I think that this country was founded on a belief in God as the source of all freedoms, and that it was commonly held that God's hand was directly involved in forming this nation which allows the freedom to worship as we please. I personally believe that God ispired our founding fathers in fighting for and setting up our country and it's amazing constitution. In other words, I believe God talked to them, in a certain sense. In that regard, I believe God continues to inspire the leaders of our government, regardless of their faith or lack thereof, though they (IMO)seem to rarely listen :) So evangelical, methodist, baptist, mormon, jew, buddhist, and even muslim (it could happen one day) are potentially guided by the inspiration of our creator to make the right decisions to keep our country great. Just my 2 cents.
