The Palestinian Crisis

It is sad to watch the Palestinian people turn on each other and do such damage to the possibility of a state to call their own. With the current civil war -- and what else can you call it -- between Hamas and Fatah the idea of a two-state solution has been dealt a serious blow.

With Hamas in control of Gaza and Fatah of the West Bank, it would appear that two entities are emerging. Perhaps Fatah and Israel can come to terms on the West Bank, leaving Gaza on its own? The questions are now before us -- what will Israel do? What will Syria do? and What will Jordan and Egypt do?

I do pray continually for peace between Palestinian and Israeli. In this context I pray that caution will be the guide.

The LA Times today has two very good articles in the print section that deal with the situation. One is a news piece and the other an analysis of the situation focusing on the future of a Palestinian state, providing possible scenarios that include returning the West Bank to Jordanian control and Gaza to Egypt. These will be critical days head. It also has an update on Mahmoud Abbas' appointment of Salam Fayyad, an independent and former finance minister, as temporary head of government.
