Good Bye Peace Process?

With a Rightist government in Israel, many of us wonder what will happen to the peace process. The choice of near fascist Avigdor Lieberman as foreign minister raises major questions as to the future of diplomacy. In his own remarks as he took his office he spoke not of peace, but of war. He's rejected the most recent efforts at peace, and has all along made incendiary statements concerning Israel's Arab community -- as well as concerning the Palestinians.

Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu has, apparently, become more moderate in his tone, but even he has stopped short of endorsing the two state solution, which is why I'm not sure that a two-state solution is viable. And the settlements must be stopped now -- and there definitely isn't any sign that this will happen.

My hope is that this government is short lived and the Israeli people will look to a more moderate, open government soon. I also hope that a more open and cooperative Palestinian government will be formed. But to do that, Hamas will have to be engaged. They control Gaza, and a 3 state solution is definitely not viable.

So, we continue to pray for the peace of Jerusalem.

This govt. is unstable. Netanyahu has promised to cooperate with the peace process. If he doesn't, the govt. will collapse and we'll get early elections again.

But there's no getting around how much trouble this govt. is for hopes of a just peace in Israel-Palestine.
