Bye-Bye Karl

That's Karl Rove -- in case anyone's wondering. Yes the good news out of Washington today is that Karl Rove is calling it quits. More than anyone else, Karl Rove has politicized government policy. He has taken otherwise good ideas and turned them into part of his political machine -- but in recent months that machine has begun to come undone.

If this departure will make a difference to how things are done in Washington is to be seen. Things have become so polarized that it's difficult for anything constructive to get done. This is one reason why the current Congress is seen with disdain. People had too high of hopes, but with a slim majority and an obstructionist President there's little they can do. But at least Karl will be gone -- gone to write his book which will try to tell us why GW is such a great President. It'll make the best seller list, I suppose, and he'll make lots of money, but at least he won't be in day to day contact with the President.

Here's one source of the report.
Regarding Rove, you might want to read this Newsweek commentary by Michael Isikoff on Rove's important role in selling the invasion of Iraq. He did so in partisan fashion and fashioned the "evidence" in ways that oversold the threat of Iraq to America -- both to Congress and to the American people.
What is interested in Isikoff's report is that through all this, Rove has not questioned the wisdom of going into Iraq and refuses to hear any dissenting position. If you dissent you will be marginalized.

Rovarian Cancer...was the malignancy excised in time to allow GW at least some minor recovery of reputation? No way. I wonder where he'll go from here...head of the RNC? Perhaps he'll hunker down in an undisclosed location with Mr. Cheney and advise him on Iranian invasion plans? Now that he won't be visible every day, it'll be interesting to see where he surfaces next.
