Do I love the land of my birth? Yes, of course! Do I think it is perfect and beyond reproach? No, I don't. Is our history pristine? No. Do I believe there are needed changes to the way we understand ourselves and live? Yes. In thinking this I am in tune with the biblical prophets and Jesus, who challenged their own people to live up to the standards that they and God had set. As Americans we too have a high bar to judge ourselves. We have, for instance never really achieved the principles set out in the Declaration of Independence, especially that all are created equal. In this essay Martin Marty introduces us to the concept of "connected criticism," a concept that makes much sense and is rooted both in the biblical story and American life. There are things about America that are exceptional, but at the same time we are not the only nation God loves!
