Gaza Situation worsens as Israelis invade

After a week long bombing campaign, which has claimed more than 400 lives, and has devastated an already desperate Gaza, the Israeli's have crossed the border into Gaza. This ground campaign will surely result in many more deaths -- on both sides. The Bush administration has essentially given a green light to the Israeli's. The position that a long term solution is needed before peace can be negotiated, essentially means that no peace is in sight and by the end of this there will be little left of the Gaza strip.

According to the news reports, more homes, another mosque, and even the American International University have been either destroyed or suffered major damage. I understand the Israeli need for self defense, but this campaign has been long planned, and they were simply waiting for the proper trigger point. And several things conspired to make this a "good" time to do this. One is the end of a ceasefire, the transition period in the American government (a time in which the current administration is essentially irrelevant and the incoming one doesn't have the authority to act), and Israeli elections, where the ruling party needs to demonstrate that it's tough enough -- so that people will vote for them rather than Likud.

So, we have a major crisis brewing and many will die.

Thus, I continue to pray for peace and an end to the violence.
